Bits of shredded tree!
« on: March 19, 2006, 20:01:19 »
Can anyone tell me, as I can't seem to find out, how long you need to stockpile shredded tree bits before you can use them.  Our neighbour has had a horse chesnut cut down and shredded, and I have been given permission to take what I like.  I am going to use some for paths between the veggie beds, and know I cannot mix them into beds and borders yet, as you only do that with composted bark, as new shreddings would take nitrogen out of the soil.  But when does non-composted shreddings become composted, to be able to use it in the garden?
Live each day as it comes, but plan your tomorrows.

Skippy, the estimate for wood shavings is somewhere between 2-3 years, so for a shredded tree, well don't hold your breath.

if you plan to put them down on paths, good, thye wont rot for a fair bit of time. We have quite a bit of the stuff round the lottie paths. pile em up nice and thick and they dont get slippy etc.

If your waiting for them to rot down, well................whats the current life expectancy??  ;D
