Is this a seasonal bird thing ?
« on: March 11, 2006, 13:57:09 »
The dunnocks have found the peanut feeder and the sparrows look immense !

Are they preparing themselves from the arduous breeding time ahead ?

give one of the sparrows a squeeze - it might just be fluffed up against the cold ;)

I was thinking the same about Mr and Mrs Blackbird and the wood pigeons today.  I'm sure Carol will give us the right answer if she sees this thread.  :)

They fluff themselves up against the cold.  It sure is cold out there just now with temperatures still pretty low.  Now when I see a greenfinch like that I immediately think it is suffering from salmonella poisoning.  Oh heck, roll on spring, this has been a long winter.

i was watching them harder after your replies and noticed that they were as big as barn owls sitting in the bush waiting for their turn at the feeder, then once they were feeding they had slimmed down again.

mind you it was cold enough to freeze the wotits off a wotsit today so i shouldn't have been surprised if they all had hats and scarves on too !

lots of activity today despite the damp and dreary conditions, which is always a joy to watch.

thanks for the tip
