hi all, am thinking of getting a cherry tree, any advice on which variety, and what is the type of rootstock important. any help appreciated

For a sweet cherry, I have seen Stella and Summer Sun growing well in my locality. I understand you can get these on roostocks which are either very dwarfing like Gisela or Giesla (don't know the spelling sorry) or semi dwarfing like Colt.
