Dunno, but it's definitely not just allotments. I could really tell some tales about churches! I think it's anything which allows petty people the chance to have a little bit of power and play at being someone.

And re churches (though mine's ok!)

I'm glad yours is OK. I get sick of power cliques and people quoting selective snippets of the Bible to justify dictatorship. We're trying very hard to be democratic at my church, and it's a real uphill struggle, since so many people want others to make the decisions, and there's always some so-and-so wanting to undermine us and take over. I dread the next minister after some that we've had in the past!

It has been a real eye opener for me, to be on the Committee.  You are treated better as an ordinary plot holder in my experience, and no one values you or the work you try to do, certainly not our Chairman, who in my opinion is a bit of a bully and intimidates people.  >:( busy_lizzie

I think my previous post on this topic needs amendment. All the allotment committees I have served on have had at least periods during which there has been a lack of democracy - amounting to my entire tenure in two cases. Our current committe is the first one I feel I have had any real input into.
Can't think why our current secretary choose to reply to my Pol Pot comment!!!

why are there so many Pol Pots in our movement?
because it's the only bit of 'power' they will ever get

shame as it is.

Yup. Big fish in small pond etc. I just turn up and work my plot and say little. Not my normal mode of behaviour at all!

 ;)
