Same here, the standard garlic is looking very healthy, as is the elephant garlic ...

Mine have magically jumped out of the soil and onto the path next to them... is this usual as I don't remember this on the planting/growing instructions?

I've had several do it this year. Is it because the ground is so frozen solid that the only way is up??

The first couple of shoots are just starting to appear above ground now. With a bit of rain and warmth they should soon be up and away (he hopes ???)

Hello JoJo.....sorry you've been disappointed with your garlic, but if you read this thread back from the beginning you'll see that most of us planted ours Oct-Nov-Dec, tho it's still OK to get some in NOW, ie tomorrow? You didn't give yours long enough to grow, is all...

Oh the excitment  - I can report progress on this thread!  Mine were planted in January and have just broken through the surface!  This is the first thing I planted on my plot so really pleased to see them.  ;D

Can I ask what to do now.  Should I water them?  How long will they take before they can be harvested and how will I know they are ready?

Thanks.

Yesterday I planted 2 rows of garlic - I never plant til about this time of year and have always had a good 'crop'......still have 3 good sized heads of garlic indoors to use (from last year's harvest)......by the time I'd finished planting yesterday, the rain was falling steadily and carried on doing so - so timing was good!

Give them 2oz/sqyd Potash & water in.

Harvest late July/August when 1/3 of the leaves go yellow. Don't overdry them before storeage.

These are the last of last year's.

We planyed ours in November and they are doing OK. Stems about 6 inches long. Tips of leaves going a bit yellow - is this a deficiency of some sort?

Tim - v stupid question - but what is potash - is it actually ash? just we had a fire in our metal bin/ chimney thing the other day and trying to think of a good home for the ash?

1. I mentioned earlier that yellowing is usually a sign of stress. Can be caused by being too lush too early in the frosts. Don't worry.

2. Potash - buy it as is. But if you have plant ash, & it's dry, certainly use it. But at a much higher rate.

3. I'm SO clever - all this talk but can't even grow my own Shallots!! This patch as planted up on 18/2 - just LOOK at it!!

My shallotts were planted in December, and are only just coming through the mulch now, so don't panic. The garlic was planted at the same time, and is now about four inches high.

I have Solent White but haven't planted it yet.    :(

What will be the best way to go, to sow them now in their final position or set them in trays as Tim has done and put them in a unheated greenhouse?  Will the lattet bring them on a lot quicker and give them a better start?  Your help is much appreciated.   :-\

I ordered some fleece and netting last week from Garden Warehouse and don't know when I will receive it so they would have no protection if they go directly into the soil.

Put them in quick; garlic needs a period of cold weather to make the bulb split.
