Wilkos online
« on: January 20, 2006, 13:34:24 »
As seasoned visitors to this forum will know, I am constantly whingeing about the lack of any cheap gardening outlets in Cambridge (that I've found yet anyway - there might be somewhere I've missed!) Just went to the Wilko website to make sure that there wasn't a store hidden somewhere here that I'd failed to notice - there isn't - but there is now a nascent online service. It currently offers only household goods, but it seems the service is going to expand. Thought I'd let everybody know!  :)
For myself I am an optimist - it does not seem to be much use being anything else.

We have a Wilko's here bupster, but it is great news for those that don't, and have to stew while we rave on about their cheap seeds etc.  Will take a look myself to see what they have online.  :) busy_lizzie

A lot more dangerous, too. Came into work yesterday a tiny bit hungover, knew I had to pop into Sainsbury's at some point to pick up some bits for this weekend, as I have friends staying. Thought, 'I'll just have a look see if Waitrose have a delivery time in the next couple of days - they had one Friday between 7 and 8. Spent £170 and I don't know how. Oop.

Much of it went on booze, though :D

Is Wilkos the same as Wilkinsons?  There's one in Huntingdon I think Bupster if you fancy a trip up the dreaded A14!

Wilkinsons in Ely isn't that far from the train station? You'd probably have to spend a fair bit to justify going there, though. I guess you know about Cutlacks already.

For cheap/good bedding plants, Fulbrook nursery in Teversham is pretty reasonable. They also do veg plants and a few sundries, but probably same as anywhere else for those things.

Darwin nursery on Newmarket Road is always worth a visit. Seeds, plants etc. there are no cheaper, but it's staffed by patients from the Ida Darwin Mental Health Hospital and is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Cutlack's is pretty good, if dangerous - I've mentioned the dangers of Mill Road shops to you before, I think :D

Didn't know about Darwin nursery though. Woo hoo! More places to spend money. Google suggests that it's bikeable - what do you think? Or I suppose there is always the bus, an option I tend to forget  :)

Thanks, Ceratonia  :D

Darwin nursery is on Newmarket Road, just past the airport, so bikelane all the way. Easy walk from the park&ride, though.  They have a farmshop, selling stuff grown by patients & volunteers on their farm in Reach, plus a selection of plants propagated on site and various seeds & sundries. Probably not worth a special trip, but you do get a different class of service in there  ;)
