Carrots in Polytunnel
« on: January 20, 2006, 23:33:50 »
I always grow early carrots in the polytunnel with good results but last year I sowed carrots after I had removed the tomato plants and have been pulling carrots from the beginning of December and will expect to be still pulling well into February. Well worth a try
Just one more polytunnel, just one more chicken coop.

Alan! Thanks for that info  :)

I only managed to grow carrots successfully last year - probably more 'luck' than design!

I haven't got a polytunnel but can the earlies be sown in a greenhouse with the same results do you think?

I've got all my packets of seeds for the year and NONE of them say 'sow in January' so I'm getting a bit 'itchy' and experimenting with putting seeds that SHOULD be grown outdoors in the greenhouse instead. Good job we've got 4 greenhouses ... my father-in-law is tearing his hair out with me  ;D

Hi Trixie, as it hapens I am going to sow my early carrots in a greenhouse this year, a row around the back and a row around the path, this way I can still plant the tomato in the middle if the carrots have not finished, good luck.

I'll do that, thanks again Alan  :)

One more question: Been into the greenhouse today and my Father-In-Law seems to have had a 'party' in there with a bag of lime and a trowel. Will the carrots be ok in there if there's lime in the soil? I think he put it down yesterday?

Not realy sure about the lime bit Trixie, supose it depends how much, they do not like fresh manure and usualy do best in soil that was manured the season before, should just give the soil a good diging and give them a go. good luck.
You could replace the soil

The soil he limed WAS replacement soil Alan  ;D

Been down on bended knees today trying to 'blow it off' the top of the beds  ;D Maybe I'll just plant them somewhere else instead!!!!

What a picture that must have been   :D, if its just laid on the top, skim the top off with a spade, turn it over and put a couple of hens in for the day.
Kathryn (wife) was up at the bottom allotment today sieving compost for her sweet peas, so I let ten Hisex out to help her, in the compost heaps , in the barrow, in the bucket, quite entertaining it was
