perhaps I'll wash only before use then. we get quite a few that are clean so those can be the ones I use for selling and giving away. we tend to use our eggs up very quickly, they're never older than just a few days, so I don't refrigerate them.

Another thing I've not been too sure about...how long do eggs keep for? I use mine up pretty quickly but I have been wondering just how long before an egg would be off ?

I have found a site which states how long eggs should be kept for and answers your previous question on whether or not they should be refrigerated. It is at:
http://www.chinovalleyranchers.com/eggfacts.htm
I have eaten eggs 4 weeks old or more and apart from the white becoming more runny, they have been all right. I do normally keep mine refrigerated, especially during the summer months.

Thanks Pauline...it was one of those questions that you never get around to asking because you feel you should know it already,so I'm pleased I did ask!
