Rose of Jericho
« on: January 13, 2006, 10:53:44 »
Mr Aqui bought me two of these for Christmas.

What do I do with them? (beyond leaving them in a dish and watering them occassionally after they've dried up)

How do you get them to grow at their best?

(googling didn't much help - just told me they dry up, roll around until they find water and then uncurl.)
gone to pot :D

unusal plants these.
Keep them in a dish of water at the bottom of plant and top the water leavel up.
They will then green up and look wonderfull let them dry out and they shrivel up again.
One of natures strangest plants.

i have always wondered what these will look like when they actually grow. do they flower? do they try to strangle all other plant life? will they creep? will they not?

i suspect they are somehow related to fern.....

Hi,
Related some what to the fern family propergated via spores?
and believe it or not it could out live you impossible to kill.
have a read below interesting or what.

A Tea from Doradillas / Rose Of Jericho Plant boosts kidney function, enhances the urinary system and is an effective douche, also widely believed to reduce stress.

The completely dried out Jericho roses will grow if placed in water.
When it is dry, it folds and turns grey and brittle. Yet place it in water
and it recovers its natural green colour and unfolds to become a Lovely
Living Organism again and it does this over and over again. It will bring
peace, power, and riches to your home while chasing away evil and
bad luck.
Older than the dinosaurs and considerably more resilient, this astonishing Lycopodium lepidophyllum plant has been around for 290 million years, which puts us evolutionary infants pretty firmly in our place. Also known as the Resurrection Plant (as well as several other names, such as the Rose of Jericho - we guess you pick up a few nicknames over 290 million years), it's the perfect plant for people who are utterly hopeless at keeping anything green alive. Even a horticulturally challenged herring (and aren't they all) could make this plant thrive.

Thank you so much for that really comprehensive information Teresa.  It is lovely of you to go to all that trouble on our behalf. "You are a ded gud"! in Geordie speak.   Will pass the info onto my sister too who was also given one.  :-* busy_lizzie
