Have used Norton plus Adaware and Spybot for years with very few problems. However, all these things need to be set up properly - default settings aren't failsafe. For example, it's useful to check the efficacity of your settings with something like "Shieldsup":

(go to bottom of page and press "proceed")

Thanks Compost - but I wouldn't use AVG again if you paid me hard cash and a week's holiday in Bermuda with Miss Porno 2005.

While AVG was installed onto my hard drive as an anti-virus protection I had to trot back and forth to the Repairs Shop on all of three occasions within a period of 6 months only... needing full clean-installs each time to eliminate the nasties.

Ditto avast! - what a fraud. I had avast! sitting in the hard drive of my brand new computer when within only another 6 months again I had to break into my piggy bank to finance yet another clean install...

And ZoneAlarm-with-Antivirus for which I have paid a hefty fee for their services is the biggest bandit of them all. While under the professional services of this organisation I have had to trot down to the repairs shop on 4 separate occasions in just the one 12-month period... with also having to toss into the trash bin one complete computer as beyond any further hope in the repairs shop.

And yes, Compost - my mistake... ad-aware and spybot are not anti-virus software. I meant avast! and my fraudulent ZoneAlarm-with-anti-virus software trash... which has burnt a hole in my pocket with both paying for a year's subscription with them and the bugs they didn't detect which then cost me 4 trips to the repairs shop.

My neighbour, meanwhile, who has exactly the same model of computer and operating system as me - has sat on his ample duff for over a year now with not even the smallest problem to upset his day. And all he uses is Norton.

He's sat there on his front porch for over a year now shaking his head in utter bewilderment at me as yet again he sees me heading for the repairs shop with my contaminated hard drive...

Add to the confusion... ? But not at all SeƱorita Rosa! If you looked inside my brain you'd see that where it doesn't look like a dozen eggs have exploded as in a microwave oven it looks like a bad pile-up of about 50-vehicles slammed into one another in icy skid conditions out on the highway...

And thanks for that Shieldup site - brilliant!

Thanks Rosa...

Incidentally, Rosa - I've been asking around about how to upload a screenshot.

The instructions I've been given by an online PC Help advisor simply doesn't gel.

Thus: Tap the 'Print Screen' key - start - run - (type in 'mspaint') - edit - paste - file - save - (type in 'JPEG' for file type) - OK - and then scroll down the page and click the 'upload' button.

Trouble is I don't have an 'upload' button anywhere on the page.

Question: If there was an 'upload' button - where does it upload to?

@Glowworm, I understand. Good luck with your chosen path - and I hope it's not back to the repairers..!! :o

(next time you have PC trouble, try this site. I find then most helpful and seem to be able to sort out things without taking drastic measures such as repair and reformat.

Love the graphic, Glowworm  ;D
The "upload" thing is misleading. Once you've got as far as saving the file, treat it as you would any other image that you want to upload. The process varies from site to site; some will have an "upload" button at the bottom of the box in which you type your text message, and that's what's being referred to in the instructions. Afraid I can't help you about how to do it here because I've never done it, but if you start a new thread I'm sure others can help you.  :)

Thanks Compost. Your moral support is much valued. I'll pay your recommended site a visit - but I have to say that the PC forum sites I've tried in the past to get help from have been an utter waste of time, hope, and energy.

You submit your question... (something that might be in dire need of a quick answer) - and what happens... ? You wait days for an answer... and most of your time is spent searching for your own question amongst 391 pages of 50 questions each page with very poor indexing.... a needle in a haystack.

I have found http://www.protonic.com to be a sincere bunch of helpers who are willing to give you their full-on attention with your PC problems. Unfortunately good intentions does not solve my problems, and sad to say the protonic crowd have not as yet solved any of my problems (somewhat to my surprise I have to say).

One of my current problems is this strange bar across the top of my page, which has half a green plugin jigsaw piece sitting in the middle.

I've taken note of your advice Rosamunda...  (you're not Ronald Biggs' Brazilian ex are you... ? )

Glad you like the graphic. Perhaps I should warn you I'm a hopeless cybo-flirtaholic who keeps a large cyber-harem of women pining for my amorous attentions...

Meanwhile... Oh Rosa I love you soooooooo... and every beat of my heart is a testament of my love for yoooooooooouuuu.... !!

Hey, ive been gone a while cos now my isp server is down- so im using a backup dial up connection, glowworm it sounds like your pc repair shop is taking you for a ride if you ask me- ive found avg and norton useless, i must face the hard truth taht i need a rafter of different programs to beat the malware and viruses, and although symantec.com is good for identifying viruses from suspicious filnames their software is worth sfa. Happy surfing, i hate my computer and my isp and all the geeks who make viruses and the companies that invest in spyware , and lets not forget all the glass on our roads that shreds my bike tyres.

Ive had a bad fortnight of technology- off to find my abacus
I LOVE OP AMPS!

I checked out that Virtual Dr site, compost - it looks good. However, I couldn't for the life of me find a 'Your Posts' tracking facility there. I have given up with other online PC help sites because I kept getting hopelessly lost trying to find where my posts were in amongst everyone else's.

When you are in the Thread you want to follow, go to the thread toolbar>dropdown Thread Tools>Subscribe to this Thread.

Sorted  ;)

Thanks Compost - but I have no idea what you're talking about.

"Thread toolbar" - yes. "dropdown" --- what 'dropdown'? "Thread tools" -- I haven't seen that written anywhere. "Subscribe to this thread"... how does clicking anything on the Thread toolbar lead you to this... ?

Which brings me to a certain point as a newbie -- I give 9/10 for the sheer technical brilliance of computer science and all that makes the Internet possible --- but as yet I'm not able to give anything higher than a very generous and charitable 4 out of 10 for the sheer illiteracy of most people involved with PCs.

This is the second time today that I have had a longish post wiped out here before being able to post them because when I went to my bookmarks or Google to look up something I found no way back to my posts.... and found myself only able to backtrack to an empty Post Entry Box.

I belong to a half dozen forums and this is the only one which suffers from this major handicap. In future each time I visit this particular forum I'm going to have to stick up a bloody great notice to myself to NOT leave the post page to go do any research etc. as this action will erase whatever I have already written. Quite bizarre - and very limiting I might add.

Sorry Compost - but the system here blew away a full half-hour response from me because the bloody thing can't handle posters doing a bit of research at other sites whilst writing their posts -- how totally pathetic. This is unique to my experience with forums - absolutely infuriating.
