Although I love my cats to bits Richard - I must admit to preferring the dogs as pets.  They are so much more part of the family as they come almost everywhere with us.  We never leave them to go on holiday.  The cats are more independent, althoug during the winter months they do tend to stay around us more.  They like their creature comforts :)

hmmm.....as a family we have had dogs (old english sheepy, pomerainian, bijon frise), rabbits (15 at one time!), guinea pigs, hamsters, budgies, cockatils, african grey parrot (who still keeps mum company), tropical fish, marine fish, gold fish, koi carp and other pond fish and chinchillas which ended up living at Longleat Wildlife park as part of their chinchilla 'pack', but none of them were mine, all my sisters or my parents.  I love animals, don't get me wrong, but I don't feel I can provide them with what they need, the space and time they need.  I spend all of my space and time looking after hub and sprogs!

oooo, and the one animal I really have no time for is.....so sorry all of you as you appear to all love them dearly.....but cats!  :-/

We have had rabbits, mice, hamsters, guinea pigs, goldfish, gerbils, rats, a dog, stick insects and cats.  My favourites were Lottie the rat, she was gorgeous, and the two cats we have now  ;D

Have had cats, dogs, rabbits, hampster and two daughters.  Got to say favourites are dogs.  ;) ;)  :D
Only joking.  Honestley though love dogs.  They are loving, loyal, playful and totally devoted little things.  All they ask for is fuss, food, fuss more food and a snuggy bed(ususlly mine) ::)

Has to be our ex-rats.called Gin and Tonic! Cuddly little critters, we were very sad to see them go to ratty heaven! :-(
Now have Guinea Pigs,  and tropical fish.no where near as affectionate or entertaining!
Have had mice, (stinky) hamster (vicious!) I am allergic to cats n dogs so they are a no go area in our house!  :'(

I have to agree with you Doris about rats. :D  I've kept fancy rats for over 20 years and find them wonderful pets.
They don't bite like hamsters, are cleaner than mice, are intelligent and trainable and full of fun. They are equal top with dogs for me.  ;D

Amazing what you can get them to do Pat.

Yes, they will fetch and yes they do sit. They also answer to their names and obey simple commands like 'off ', 'up', 'down', 'bed', 'no', 'yes', 'take', 'leave' etc. They are as intelligent as some dogs and love to learn.
One even knew the word 'football' and would run off and get her table tennis ball so that she could play with you!!

I hasten to add I never 'make' them do anything they don''t want to do and would never teach them 'tricks.'

They really do make lovely pets it's just a pity their lives are so short.

Cheers Eileen.
