Faith in human nature restored...
« on: September 06, 2003, 17:33:09 »
Following on from Ceri's elf and my debacle last week, today has seen a return to demonstrations of how nice most people are.

Firstly, there was a meeting of minds in relation to the apple tree and a sharing of thoughts.  Nobody said 'you can't do this' and 'you must do that' or was dismissive of the opinions of others.  We just mellowed out over the pruning subject.

Then, as said tree is on plot number 2, I had a conversation with my new neighbour about the ghastliness of brambles and how difficult it will be to dig certain bits of the plot.  'What you need' he said 'is black polythene.  Do you want some?'  As I started to say 'Well, if you can spare some...' he'd started to lay said item over my plot.

In less than 15 minutes we had used the entire roll on covering about half the plot!   'There!' said neighbour ' that should help!'  So generous....I'm blown away!

ooh thats good, we had a really good morning as well, a couple of the old regs came over and congratulated us on clearing so much of the plot and gave us loads of advice about stuff we could plant and spare stuff we could have of theirs. it was nice because they weren't telling us how to do it, just explaining what we could do...

Ceri and son came to visit as well and it was lovely to meet them both, by some miracle two small offshoots of the comfrey had sprung up and let themselves be dug up with minimum 'i can't get the spade in' embarrasment!!  :D

Well, I came home from work yesterday and found my neighbour digging over one of my newly cleared areas!

I said that he was too kind but I would have done it and he replied 'No, this is no job for a woman'

What a great neighbour I have.

Well, I was taken aback but ..... my neighbour is 6'3" and built like a brick netty  and can dig over an area of 7' x 12' in no time at all, whereas I am quite slightly built, and maybe he thought I would not be capable.

I didn't ask him - he just did it!  When I got home the deed was done, I had no idea he was going to do this.  I think he was just being  caring, if slightly over protective.

He is 60 and has definite views of what are 'mens' and 'womens' roles regarding labour.

Oh No!  Fork handles - always reminds me of the Two Ronnies sketch in the hardware shop - fork handles/four candles.

I could give him a bottle of wine or some runner beans.  Now I wonder which he would prefer  .......

gonna try leaving my plot unlocked i think  ;)

i just love allotment people, there doesn't seem to be anyone down there who isn't nice, a few people keep themselves to themselves but most people hang over the fence for a chat and everybody says hello when you pass (or occasionally some other things in strong gerodie accents that i don't understand, but they are smiling, so i agree  :D)

met this fantastic bloke the other day who told me that he was surprised we didnt get more ufo sightings since it was probably quite easy for them to get here through the hole in the ozone layer......

Legless, he shouldn't be surprised - he's just in the wrong place - he should be down the Bigg Market on a Saturday night - all the aliens he could want are out!!!
