Sorry teresa, can`t find a mention of it anywhere. Even the Rhubarb Compendium (everything you wished to know about Rhubarb, and then some) makes no mention of it. The only (possibly) helpful suggestion that I can make is that the RHS maintain the National Rhubarb Collection - partly at Wisley and partly at High Carr. Unfortunately there is no list of maintained varieties on the RHS web sites, and you would have to write or email the RHS for information.
However, purely anecdotally, the Manchester area, particularly around Sale, was a very well known Rhubarb growing area in Victorian times, and one of the staple dishes in the local workhouses was Rhubarb Dip (presumably for the toothless geriatrics to soak the hard crusts provided) and it may be that the name is simply a local nickname from these associations.
