Mineral composition of seaweed?
« on: October 24, 2005, 12:37:37 »
Anyone know what the mineral composition of seaweed, specifically SM3 seaweed extract, is?  I've just stuck some bits of hardy geranium in pots with narcissus planted round them, & I want to feed the geraniums without using something high in nitrogen, as narcissus don't like nitrogen.  Chase organics, where I got the SM3, say it's suitable, but don't know or won't tell what the composition is, which leaves me a bit dubious.  I'd rather risk killing the geraniums by not feeding at all than risk killing the narcissus by giving something high in nitrogen.

In my thought, seaweed fertilizer is rather high in nitrogen. It can be used as a watered or diluted soil feed for your plants or it can be used as a foliage food by spraying it onto the plants leaves.

Having farmed in Jersey before the war, I keep saying that vraic is great.

Too heavy in NPK? No way! It has virtually nothing but trace elements.

Well you learn something new every day. Thanks Tim.
I used to use it on my seedlings in spring to give them a good start in life.

Thanks Tim - I've been searching the Internet for something like that for a couple of days, to no avail - exactly what I wanted to know.  Don't think the narcissus mind a bit of Nitrogen, so long as it's not top heavy - & it sounds as though the seaweed should have rather more Potash, which they like, & not an awful lot of either.  I'll get feeding!

I regard it as more of a health-giving substance than anything else.
