This beauty has been loitering on my plot for the last week or so. It's a male Sympetrum striolatum, a common small dragonfly in the UK.

Great photo Robert. Get them round my pond, but they never stay still long enough for me to snap them.

Excellent photo Robert. Had a beauty in my garden the other day but by the time I'd got the camera it had gone (is this the gardener's version of the fishing 'one that got away'?)
Cheers,
Rob ;)

Lovely photo.
We get them in our garden too - but not that particular one, ours are the blue coloured ones.

Dragons or damsels? Dragons fly very strongly, are usually bigger, and rest with their wngs spread. Damsels are weaker flyers, smaller, and rest with their wings folded along their backs.

Lovely photo, last year had loads in the conservoty OH had a fit when he caught me with a jam jar and a piece of paper trying to catch them to get them outside. He said the sting so went out and bought a small net worked a treat. But this year only had one the pool attracts them but could not work out why they came inside.
Damsel it that the blue one's?

There are blue dragons and blue damsels. Don't go by the colour, look at how they hold their wings while resting. Once you've spotted the difference, you'll never get confused again.

My son just stopped by and showed me how to post a picture.
I was walking along the Hardscrabble Creek outside Westcliffe Colorado, when these two buzzed me and landed only a few feet away. They stayed long enough for me to snap this.

Get a camera which has a macro capacity; it doesn't have to be wonderful. Mine goes down to 4 inches, which isn't that good; a Nikon coolpix will go closer. Then stalk them, be patient, and don't do what I did and forget to use fill-in flash for backlit shots!

Beautiful photos ! Thanks.
It is mid October and whenever I go down to the boat, there are still lots of them hovering around at the side of the river - The weather is marvellously warm for this time of year !
:D ;D
