Brrrrrrr!!!!!!
« on: October 05, 2003, 14:53:46 »
Well did it freeze for you? -3c. here last night. Even with fleece on the tunnel it got the last of the gourd plants. And as for the Paulonia, wiped. Ah well, at least it brings closer the digging of the only 6 parsnips to grow this year.

Well Eric, the weather report said last week sometime we could get frost near the ground but looking at the plants it doesn't seem to have happened here in the north west of Holland. Of course we do have the advantange of the Northsea water being warm. Very wet and windy at the moment with storm expected. I better get those last tomatoes out of the greenhouse and let them ripen indoors. Next month the witloof has to come out of the ground, put inside to be forced and we'll have nice fresh leafy veggies around x-mas and into the new year. Stay warm! -Ina

Well, local weather reports keep warning gardeners of ground frost, but in Essex the garden still seems to be fighting on, however, the rain that is yet to stop falling is mighty cold!  No rain for yonks, then mother nature forgets to turn the taps off!

You haven't had any!  Wow, honestly, down it came in buckets!  The butts are full, the grass is green (at last!) and the soil looks wonderful!  I want it to stop long enough now so I can get down to the plot and take advantage of the new soft soil! Still bl**dy cold though!

Planted one of the hens (deceased, old age) underneath a magnolia grandiflora yesterday. Dug down 2feet 6 inches and found absolutely no evidence of any moisture in the soil whatsoever.  Leycestra and Hydrangea and Robinia have totally collapsed. The rain reached about 100 metres away and stayed there. We get about half the national average usually.

People just do not believe it sometimes. We were shopping in  our local town, about 5 miles away and the heavens opened. Anne had left the washing out, so we dashed home thinking it would be soaked. Daughters expressed extreme astonishment as the sun had not stopped shining. We have driven in rain from the lakes nearby (on the other side of the hill in the rain and turned down our lane and the road is dry. We have not had any real soaking since July. The water butt on the front downspout has about 6 inches of water in it and has not been used for  4 months.  It is raining now, vaguely. One drop every minute type stuff. Still it keeps the Clidders happy (Now that reference will fool you I bet).
