Reducing size of Photos
« on: August 25, 2005, 22:01:17 »
Having tried to download pictures on this site, advised that they are too large. Can anyone help me with information as to how I reduce the size of my pictures please?

go to - http://www.imageshack.us/
where it says browse - you look into your own pc for the photo.
then click on host it.
once its uploaded you can swipe over a choice of adaptations of the same photo.
but if you pick the second one down from the top of the list of which states its for forums, so that its highlighted, then copy and paste at the end of your script  i.e.

yours truly (return)

.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pic00042px.jpg][/URL]

hope this helps as this is a thumbnail of the true picture which can be enlarged by people clicking on the photo.
cheers Kev

;) Hey Kev I use Imageshack and didn't realise that you could do that, so what you are saying is that if I upload a heavy pixelated image in a thumb, peeps can open it quickly, particularly peeps without broadband? ???

I must try it and get some feed back. :-\ not convinced. :-X

Hi Roy
the easiest method to reduce size is simply to openyour photo in whatever programme you use and to save a copy as a bmp file or jpg file as these are much smaller but you do lose some clarity but not enough to matter, save it under a slightly different name so as to keep the original quality photo. With regard to image shack, go to my question regarding dicksonian tree fern and click on the photo there, that was uploaded through imageshack!
good luck Kev

I use HP Photo manager to reduce my images but was unaware you could use Imageshack, I have put this image up in a thumb, quite large at 491kb but still feel peeps on Dial-up will have to wait some time to open it ???

Is there anyone on Dial-up that could confirm this please? ;)

make sure your image is no more than 72dpi resolution when you put it up - as this is all a computer screen will be able to display anyways. the way to change the resolution differs from programme tp programme - photoshop, for instance, has a >save for web option which will compress the size of the image down, both in physical display size, as well as resolution, to produce a sharp image that is quick to load.

other message boards use a 80kb restriction for uploads - this also works very well for dial up users. i would suggest 490kb is still too big.

My computer obviously does not like the programmes suggested, as it keeps on freezing, or blocking them! I shall experiment further but failing that I will have to ask Dan.

If you have Microsoft Office - versions upto 2000, Photo Editor is probably the easiest one to use.

You can also use IRFANVIEW to resize your photographs It is a FREE programme and can be downloaded at
http://www.irfanview.com/
You can also use it for a number of image editing functions. I normally use it to resize before posting to Image Shack. It is an easy programme to use but if you need help using it just post

WASSISNAME, does it reduce the file size as well as the image size. And in doing so does it reduce the picture quality.

Dot it does reduce the file size and the image size and slightly reduces the quality of the original but to an extent that you would not notice on webpages

Try  this   http://www.axiomx.com/picsizer.htm    I had loads of complaints about the size of my pics, but this is nice and easy to use and you can find it free on some sites.
