JRP gave me an idea
« on: April 18, 2005, 13:02:25 »
Having read with interest, JRP’s site http://www.recycling.moonfruit.com/  got me thinking, what will I do with all these empty milk cartons I have been saving to carry water up to the Lottie? ???

Well here is what I am doing with the small 4 pinters for starters, what I like about these is they have their own drip tray and can be stored indoors without mess, plus by using the top half of the carton you can use the handle hole as a capillary for water and feed. 8)

I just drilled a few holes in the screw cap for drainage. ;D

I have just surfed all through JRP's site and he and his friends have grown ship loads of fruit and veggies from plastic containers, (No dig) and regret I missed him on BBC2 >:(

Fantastic idea Roy. I've run out of pots and have loads of 4pt milk bottles...

Now I just need a tip on creating more room and making sterile seed compost out of holey socks, or something!
gone to pot :D

You can sterilise the compost in the microwave...wouldn't advise it with teenagers around though, they will think its mince and eat it. ;D ;)

Great Idea.

I'm using mine by cutting them in half longways, and am growning Peas and carrots in them as it gives a very deep container for them.

I thought shock horror as I saw this root poking through the green cap and discovered that if you catch it in time you can carefully unscrew the cap saving the root and the soil stays where it is thank goodness and they are all growing along fine.

I use them in my greenhouse with supa-drippa taps from the Organic Gardening cataloguehttp://www.organiccatalog.com. They drip onto some capillary matting held in a growbag tray. It's proved very successful at producing well-rooted plants this year (although they do try to grow into the capillary if you don't watch them).

I've also seen slug-traps made out of them by cutting a hole in one side (approx 2-3 inches from the base) and then filling with beer.

I just can't quite get the hang of giving my beer to the slugs though.  ;D

Excuse the ignorance but how does this work? I am looking for something for carrots and would like to do this if it works, but can't picture it in my head.
An example pls.

Value bitter from Tescos - 99p for four - saves the 'they like the same stuff I do' heartache as they will put up with the value stuff when I won't.

Gone up in price again? Was 88p for the 4 cans last year. A friend of mine brews her own cheap stuff for the slugs....

Slightly off topic, but Joy Larkcomb reckons she knows gardeners who plant seeds in used teabags. Anyone fancy trying this?
For myself I am an optimist - it does not seem to be much use being anything else.
