Round Courgettes
« on: August 13, 2005, 15:40:08 »
Is anyone growing round courgetes and if so when do you pick them? I have a few which are getting quite big but they are quite pale so I'm not sure if they are ready or not.

yes I thought that as well,  I planted courgettes, squash and pumpkin together and the rain washed the labels but i am fairly sure they are round courgettes

Round courgettes, should really be picked when about the size of a grapefruit, ie 3 to 4 inches diameter. You can let them grow larger, but you merely end up with larger, less succulent fruit.

Some types say golfball size. I let some grow bigger & they were mostly seed & pith.

Cricket ball size is favourite around here; just right for me to do my Shane Warne impersonation :-[.

You growing Golden Snitch plants there, Carloso?  Could make you a fortune if you can catch them before they fly away ;) ;D.

Hi All,

My eight balls are green....curiouser and curouser.

Picking between golf and tennis ball unless I'm away then it's teapot size!

I've had them interplanted between sweet corn as advocated by the Americans, complete disaster, I only have a small allotment and have to crop closely to get any kind of quantity of anything. The courgettes have pushed all the corn over and the corn has sheltered the courgettes and I've got semi terminal mildew!

The long courgettes aren't so bad as they trail a bit more but those eight balls are really beefy plants.

Andrew B, cooking them the same as my straight ones, using many of the recipes for courgettes here and on R4A.

Carloso, time to practice your skills as a seeker, but beware, Doris Pinks is a skilled Nimbus 2000 rider and could outpace you!
