What are these berries?
« on: August 17, 2005, 17:02:18 »
I went out to pick elderberries and blackberries this afternoon and noticed loads of these berries growing on a tree. Does anyone know what they are and if they are edible.

Edit: update, found out now, it's the Guelder rose. :)

I tried making a syrup type cordial from them last night, put it this way, I won't be bothering again :P ;D. 1pt of liquid and 500g sugar and it still doesn't taste all that pleasant....and they smell of wet dog. Now I understand why even the birds don't bother eating them! ;D They look so lovely, cherry red, but believe me they don't taste as good as they look. And if anyone is going to try them, they should not be eaten raw as they can cause stomach cramps, but cooking makes them okay (okay doesn't mean tasty though). :)
