I think I`d wait until the weather forecast improves a bit - probably next week.

I always start some of mine in 3" pots. Then plant them on using the bulb planter!
However, don't forget, that onions like firm ground when growing otherwise they have a tendancy to go to seed. And, red onion sets will have a tendancy to go to seed if planted to early.
