Hi Magaret,

Can you possibly give us the name of the site you mention as I have been trying to find a good one to trace our ancestors if possible.  Also, do you have to pay for the information?

Mind you, I might not like what I find as I think on my father's side I am descended from gypsys so what happens before that I dread to think!!

My husband has got the Death Certificate of his grandmother, so can go back to the 1800's but would like to go back even further if possible.

Pat

Hi Margaret, yes I know all about the LDS site and have used it many times.  There is also a site where you can access the 1851 census for Gloucestershire, so if anyone wants the link they can message me and I`ll provide it.  I`m lucky because I have my own copy which has a search facility that makes life so much easier!  :)   I haven`t been doing the research very long but I have numerous strands linked to my husbands family and I`ve found my late father in laws great grandmother...........but not the great grandfather, something of a mystery there!!  :o   ;)  Many thanks for your message, Sue  ;D

What's the name of the site Margaret?  Bin trying to get past 3 weeks last Tuesday for ever  ;D

My uncle and I have both been trying to get further back than 1900s, there's some argy bargy between a welsh ancestor and a Jamaican lady and I'd like to get to the bottom of it - any excuse to confirm my roots are in Jamaica and get an excuse to visit...

Hi Pat and Sueand Mystic mog

Sue,you are obviously well into it!! I have quite a few gaps still, but every now and again ,a snippet of info comes through via another member of the family helping with the research and i get all excited again.

Pat and mystic, the address is www.familysearch.org

It is free, which is great. It looks more complicated than it is,and once you start trying it out it becomes clear pretty quickly. As I say,I have gone back a long way, much further than i ever dreamt of and it has been fantastic.Last month I  went to a little village in Bucks and actually found the grave of my great great great great grandfather and mother!!

If you need any help with understanding the way the site works, just ask.

Sue,I don't have any relatives in gloucs, unfortunately, but thanks for the offer.

you can choose the 1881 census from the drop down menu by clicking on Search For Ancestors, then click on Census on the left.  Good luck, Sue

Ooohh Margaret, must have been really touching to see that grave...I've got an obscure family name and in theory it shouldnt be hard to trace, in fact I met an air hostess on my way to Spain with the same name!  But can I trace my lineage, can I ....

Will try the site, thanks v much to you and SueT

I don't believe it, are you interested in genealogy?  I have not read all the messages yet?   Guess what I did for 15 years.  I was secretary of the local Family History society.  Now I will go back and read all the messages about this subject.  I can help anyone interested in tracing  their family tree in Scotland, not England.

I feel like a found a penny and lost a pound Carol.  Was all excited for a mo there, but sadly family appear to be from England, Wales, Ireland, Jamaica but sadly not Scotland - hey ho, bet there's loads of happy bunnies out there who will utilise your skills

What a great job though...

I have been in the census to trace my Great Grandfather, according to them he does not exist!! My Mum was most upset  ;D  So bit stuck now...One set of Grandparents are Swiss, so not a lot of luck looking into them! I think our lot moved around quite a bit which makes it harder to find them :(

I have the 1881 Census for Great Britain, but don't know how I could help anyone in the Shed.  The sites you are all looking at are good.  There is also a site called Genforum.  You will see your surname being researched by all the people in the world (mostly American) but who knows you may pick up someone else researching your family.  My advice is also to join your local Family History Society.  You may find again that your family has been researched already.

If anyone is interested the following sites are very useful if you want to buy census cd`s etc.

www.archivecdbooks.com

www.genealogysupplies.com

I have bought census discs from both sites and they are very good, but they also sell other software.  :D
