The best potatoes EVER
« on: June 24, 2005, 10:28:17 »
Just been out and dug up my first potatoes. The variety is Charlotte and I steamed them and finished with a little fresh mint and parsley.  I have never tasted anything so Wonderful.  All that back breaking digging and muck spreading is worth it.I'm an allotment junkie now. Can't wait to start sampling my next crop  of Broad Beans.  My courgettes are coming along nicely too. Sorry but I had to share my joy with someone. ;D

(charlotte too) but  they were super tender and delish - yum yum! i too am enjoying the benefits of the allotment with all that super fresh salad stuff and now the pots! :D

Well done!

I too had my first lot of new potatoes recently and they were lovely just as you prepared them.

Mine were Maris Bard and Nicola with MB being the better all round...

I've also got lots of crops coming through and will keep you all posted...

I harvested my first root yesterday (charlotte) and was delighted!  I got loads! A lot of people had been saying their crop was poor this year I must be doing something right.

well they obviously loved my clay because it kept them nice and moist. i hardly have watered my potatoes at all.

although, the roots havent done a great deal of 'breaking up the clods'. when i dug up that  potato plant yesterday, i was once again left with a pile of clay bricks :(

That is good to hear db.  We have got Duke of York, Charlotte and Pink Fir Apples planted.  Charlotte is in flower  now so I am hoping it won't be too long before we can harvest.  Never done Charlotte before so I am glad they are so delicious. My mouth is watering already.  :) busy_lizzie

Well - this is what we got in lieu of Charlotte - Nicola.

This is the last plant. Not as even as the shop ones, but good enough for me.

Yield varied from 15 to 32.

Arran Pilot  :)  First time I've grown a large batch of spuds and they are delicious and not at all slug ridden as was warned by some as I was growing them under black sheet mulch.  What a relief to peel back the plastic and they were just lying there waiting to be lifted.  They are very good for salad and stayed in one piece in my overcooked casserole the other day.  I boiled some yesterday then fried them off in the bacon pan and they were delish that way too  ;D   The next crop will be Desiree and the later ones are Cara.  Can't wait  :)

Had to chuck nearly all of my Anyas as started going bad. Dug up my Saxon's a couple of days ago and hoping these will store better although a fair amount of superficial wireworm damage.

International Kidney are my earlies, and they are the tastiest early variety I have cropped so far, although the yield is not large. Like you Wardy, I have Desiree and Cara to follow, as well as Pink Fir Apple a little later.

Oh, bad luck, Andy.  Cutting the green bits off was what I had to resort to last year when my pots failed - I lived.  Only potatoes I succeeded with last year were PFA so that's what I'm growing again this year.

Yes you right Roy, but I dont grow second earlies as such, so after my earlies are all up, the main crop is the next to be lifted.

Roy       Yes my Arran Pilot's are very shiny as I go over them daily with Pledge  ;D

Had a lovely boiling of AP's for tea and love them.  Their taste is F.A.B.  :)

How stupid can you get?

That was not the last Nicola - but the last of the first row!!
So, the photo is changed to show the first of the last row! In better ground, thankfully. Further from the roots of a 55' fir tree.

Notice something that sometimes surprises you?
The first Lady Balfour from the next row, masquerading!
They often cross over like that.
