chicken advice for some beginers please
« on: July 15, 2005, 21:26:01 »
Hi,

we are trying to become as much self sufficient as we can, we have an allotment on the go, which is doing quite well, we have been making jams from the fruit in are garden and
we have bought four 20 week old pekin bantams at the weekend, two of them roost on the perch, the other two roost in the nesting boxes, huddled up.

our question is should we move the two that are in the boxes and put them on the perch ? or will they move themselves as they get older?

any help would be appreciated.  ::)

Put them up on the perch every evening once they go into the house, they should get the idea after a few days and start perching by themselves. The idea to keep them out of the nest boxes is to keep the bedding in there clean so that you can collect nice clean eggs.

Well done for getting some hens, they are lovely to keep.  :D

close up nest boxes at night then they will start using perches by themselves

Thanks for the info, we lifted them as you said and now they perch on their own ;D, just a few more weeks and we'll have some eggs
