Hens in their New Home
« on: July 21, 2005, 21:20:51 »
They have been in the garden for a couple of weeks now and seemed to have adapted well. They stay in their run until the kids get back from school and then free range around the garden until they put themselves to bed in the evening. At the moment we are averaging 2.5 eggs a day.

The run is moved daily and they love rooting around in the beds, added bonus is the death rate of slugs!

(And the eggs are yummy!)

Ooooh, fresh eggs  :) I had to buy eggs this week for the first time since christmas (got a big cake to bake tomorrow), I didn't like buying them one bit but they were bought from a local honesty box scheme so not too bad. Do you have just the 3 hens Jerry?

Yes, just the 3. The black one is Dora (a Daisy Belle), or Dora the Explorer. The all white one (a White Star) is Snowdrop and the white with black freckles (Sussex Star) is Pearl.

Snowdrop lays pure white shelled eggs which are lovely!

No, I am afraid I did not make it. Time did not allow me that luxury so I did a fair bit of research and opted for this house that came flat packed from:

http://www.henfieldpoultry.co.uk/

The same place the hens came from a few months back.

I have made a couple of minor adjustments but so far very pleased with it indeed. It is large enough for 6 hens but we will stick with just the three for now.

Thanks

Jerry

Oh wow! I wish we were able to keep chickens - I think they are so lovely. We suffice with free range eggs from a local farmer - £1 a dozen isn't bad!
