A Poem Before The Panto
« on: December 19, 2003, 17:14:23 »
Entitled: Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more !

So let the panto begin
While I am visiting kin
Will view on Saturday morn
Alone and all forlorn
But have fun and frolic my friends
And let us all make amends

Oh what a load of tripe
I much prefer the snipe

So Hugh accept this challenge my foe
Pick up the gauntlet and have a go
Compose a poem in Latin
And let’s renew our scrappin’
Be mindful now no cheating
Or you may receive a beating

Drat! As masochism is your trait
You’ll no doubt enjoy your fate
Admirers you have a plenty
Some dubious ones gaining entry

In which case I’ve wasted my time
Endeavouring to impress you with this rhyme

I’m having so much fun
And hopefully more to come
So lend me your ear
In the New Year!

Let us say a prayer for the author

Our Hugh who art in heaven
Hallowed be thy name
Thy kingdom come
Thy will be done !  ;D

AMEN

My first reaction was to say "What on earth`s the point? Everone will just say I`m showing off (perish the thought), and, in any case, how many will understand it?

However, bearing in mind that the construction of the latin sentence is such that rhyming verse is virtually impossible (even Virgil and Catullus couldn`t manage it) "WHAT THE HELL?", so blank verse only:-

O quid solutis est beautius curis,
Cum mens onus reponit, ac peregrino
Labore fessi venimus larem ad nostrum,
  Desideratoque acquiescimus lecto?

Which is probably how I shall feel after 10 minutes of you lot tonight

Modernist poets might be dismayed
At the lack of progression herein displayed
To go back **yrs is an option I think
And into the quagmire of rhyming we sink

To a scholar in latin, respect must be due
A dead language it may be, but used through and through
In many a language, across the whole world
But the time stick I think about now should be twirled (desperate I know, but what rhymes with world!)

I throw down the gaunlet to all who join in
To write verse so modern, it maketh me grin

Go on then oZZy  ;D

BUT WHERE IS IT? [/glow]

Someone buy a round, to liven things up a bit!
