No going back....
« on: January 01, 2004, 22:46:04 »
Over the Xmas break I have seen several programs on people that have emigrated to different parts of the world to live and/or earn a living.

Questions are:

1) If you could, would you? ???

2) If you needed to run your own business for an income what would it be? ::)

3) Where would you emigrate to and why? :)

Never mind emigrating.

Who watches 'Escape to the Country' and A) wishes they could do so. and B) drools over some of the lovely garden some of the houses shown have?

Me on both counts, I do live on the edge of a country town, so the Dorset countryside is within walking distance, but the house is very suburban and I would LOVE to move into the depths of the countryside to a period house with at least an acre of garden attached.

Ah well I can dream can't i?  :)

Though if i did emigrate it would be to somewhere 'green' where I could still garden.  New Zealand or perhaps the 'New England' part of america.

1. Yes please!
2. Either plant/garden related or music related
3. ummm.....possibly southern France, or Oz as we have family there.

Richard, Ava and I had the period cottage with an acre of land in a rural location in Kent, but mother nature interferred and we found a baby girl under the gooseberry bush and we had no time to enjoy the house or garden.  Once the kids grow up and leave home (wishful thinking!!!) then we plan to sell up and try that dream again.

1)  No - like Richard says 'would like to escape to the country' :)

2)  Definitely a nursery and grow most of the plants myself.  My favourite passtime, sewing seeds, taking cuttings and watching them grow.  Spend most of my time in my greenhouses during the summer. :D :D

3)  Like I said, wouldn't emigrate, would probably like to be Richard's neighbour in deepest Dorset, beautiful county ;D

Ozzy,

Know Bournemouth quite well, Mum grew up there and still has a friend living over there, so have visited the town quite often.

Not sure i'd call it 'xenophobic' but walking around the town I have had funny looks given to me as if they could tell i was a 'country' boy.  Town itself: too big and busy, seafront nice but a bit run down.

Pat.

You seem quite taken with my home county. Thats great.

Ozzy

Trouble with Dorset is, not very broad ethnic mix, largely WASP's (white anglo saxon protestants), so anyone different is going to be treated as such. Whereas in the cities, the mix is taken for granted more.  Bournemouth is geting better in this respect (more cosmopolitan than the rest of the county), though where I live a non white face still draws attention, because they are so rare.

Much as i love dorset, if i had the chance i would move west into Devon or Cornwall, every time i go down that way I fall in love with the landscape all over again.
