Carrot Celebration
« on: July 01, 2005, 12:26:35 »
After years of disapointments with growing carrots, I have this week harvested my first decent crop!  ;D

After failing with growing in the ground I tried them in deep 'rose' pots this year (which were later plunged in the ground).  After promising thinings earlier in the season, I decided to thin them again - and was pleasantly surprised at the size of the roots. There are still more to come!

I took a few photos that I will post up when i can get them uploaded.

PS I tried again at sowing direct in the soil recently - without great sucess (seeds germinated but many were later eaten), so it looks like the pot method will be used again.

well done!

You've sold me. I sowed some in the ground. Got good germination, but then the leaves started vanishing - the dreaded slugs. Last time I looked there was one tiny plant left (three months after sowing). A month ago I planted some round ones in a trough under fleece and have more and bigger leaves than the ground ones (must see about thinning this weekend - thanks for reminding me!) Only going to use pots from now onwards.
gone to pot :D
