The weather
« on: May 15, 2005, 23:40:19 »
All of this talk of weather, and whether it is safe to put out tender plants, and frosted foliage on spuds, has led to an illustrius A4All member living in Vermont, to keep me updated with reports of his weather as we seem to suffer a slightly milder version a week or so later.

Friday morning in Vermont saw record equalling cold, for the date. Areas less than 200 km from here saw temperatures around -6C, we were about -2C. My Gunnera has lost it's leaves, even the Japanese knotweed has been knocked back by  half!
Every year people here say "Where is spring?" but this is turning into a truly cold spring. Amarillo, Texas, got snow last week! The daffodils are still out here (some springs, when it has gone from early spring to summer in a week, they can go by in a week) I've got Hostas that still have furled leaves and I am examining last years new Buddelia (we have had to wait for the new cold hardy varieties to even stand a chance of overwintering them) for signs of growth.

For those that whose spuds have suffered in the cold temperatures, frosted potatoes would benefit from an application of N to help generate new vegetative growth.

In other words, if true, the coming weekend could well be a cold one! :-\

Amarillo....!! Wish the g/children would stop singing it!!

But yes - Metcheck suggests some very cold spells. Hence my runner bean 'sail'.

We haven't had a frost for a month now. So some of my tomatoes and courgettes have been happily hardening off for a few weeks. Frost forecast for tonight.

Fortunately it's all in pots, so I'll just move them into the shed overnight.

But i really need to get things in the ground. I might have to take the chance and get plenty of fleece at the ready!
gone to pot :D

Thanks, Petals - is this better?

I know that you will have seen it before, but it's what inspires me.

PS You & Eric's chicken ought to get together sometime & you'd really have a ball!!

Another weather update from our friend in Vermont.

I think you may be experiencing the same weather system we experienced that brought us two weeks of really hot weather. So, an update. It cooled off to seasonal norms a week ago, thankfully relatively slowly so that we avoided the strong thunderstorms that can be really damaging, giving us beautiful weather (loads of sunshine and no humidity) for the past week. The forecast though is that we will be returning to the heat and humidity starting tomorrow and it will be sustained again. You may have some brief relief from your labours coming your way so enjoy it while you can.

I'm afraid it's still broken, Tim  ???

I'm not sure where Eric's chicken has got to?  I might have to start checking local asylums.

I'm too old for this lark!

It all worked a while ago. And, of course, it works this end.

And when & if you get it, it's the same old trash.

Eric "lost his chicken & is too old to look for it!"
