Herbs on the windowsill
« on: December 11, 2003, 21:50:26 »
I try to grow some of the not-so-hardy herbs on my kitchen windowsill as it can be a bit tough for them here outside.  Whitefly always arrives to stop their progress.  Affected herbs are - thyme, marjoram, basil.  they were sown this spring/summer.  Where does it come from and how can I avoid it?
:-/Cheers, Em

Have you brought them in from outside  or just grown them indoors?

- don't know, but it is most likely to have come in with them?

It is less (tho' not un-) usual for the fly to get to them inside.

Before you bring anything inside, dip the head into soapy water - and then a rinse? = Tim

Hi,
what prompt replies - how wonderful.
I'm talking two years of plants now.
Some were sown inside and kept inside, ie. basil - it was dreadful for whitefly.  Marjoram and thyme were sown indoors and put out for a breath of fresh air on a calm warm day.
when I tried a few tomatoes last year on the windowsill they were badly affected by whitefly although never put outside.  Windows open for air though.
Don't know if this is any help.  Do other people get whitefly indoors like that?
:)Thanks, Em

Never had white fly like that indoors, only in my greenhouse where they flock like pigeons!  Red spider mite in my conservatory is about the only bug to bother me in the house.  I am hoping this cold snap has killed off all the nasties.
