I give up!!!!
« on: January 28, 2004, 15:44:29 »
I think my bloodpressure is about to go through the roof!!!  >:( >:(After expecting to be connected to Freeserve Broadband today, I have now been told that BT can't connect me after all.  This after paying out for the first month's payment, two extra splitter filters for my phones and waiting the 10 working days anxiously watching my modem for the connection to start.   :'(

What can I do?  I am tying up my phone line so much as I am spending more and more time on the puter (mainly on this site I might add!!)  Someone mentioned ntl but I think that is cable isn't it and I don't really want my garden dug up!  Any suggestions? ???

.......oh no.....that sounds like bad news......

1st things first......straight on the phone to freeserve to ask for your 1st month's payment back......they haven't given you anything....(except getting BT to check your line).....

Badger BT to find out why they cannot connect you (my brother applied three times and only on the third did they manage to connect him).

If it is because you are too far from your local exchange....BT are currently rolling out "Extended Reach" Broadband service...(just do a search in google)...

...if you have cable in the area, then NTL is pretty good......

If however you haven't, have a good "honest" think about how much time you will be spending on line....if it is over say 50 hours a month, then you will probably be best with a one off payment every month......(not broadband though).....

If you were desparate for broadband, but don't get any luck with phones, you can always try satellites.......but that is about £80 per month (last time I looked).......

Some companies are testing broadband via Mains Voltage supply, I hear......I think they are testing it in Scotland in a couple of towns.......but again, you might have to do a google search......

Good Luck....

 Patricia,
I have NTL cable for tv and telephone line, they didn't make much mess laying the cables and tidied up nicely; however their orgnisational side is somewhat lacking, couldn't organise a gang bang in a brothel!

Hi Pat. Oh dear having problems again.

Not sure I can help on the BT front. It could be your area isnt set up for broadband yet. It needs at least 400 people in an area interested in BB before BT will make the changes.  Howeve i would have thought that that was somthing you should have been told about BEFORE signing up. If you cannot get it it is wrong of BT to wait until you have signed up, to tell you about it. Whatever the reason (old fashioned exchange, wrong wires etc)

We use AOL broadband, and to be fair despite other faults, the BB sign up service was very good.  We didnt change our price plan or receive our new equipment until the line was converted by BT, which ensured we were all clear to get the service before connecting up or paying any money.  Service and delivery was nice and prompt too, no unnesesary waiting or any thing like that.

Set up was simple too, connect the modem and dsl adaptors, load some software and then off and running.

Sorry if I sound like i am crowing/showing off, I just wanted you to know how easy itcan be. Perhaps you chose the wrong provider? :-/

Yes NTL is a cable company.

Hope this helps

Thanks Ava and Robin.  Don't worry Ava I have already been on to Freeserve and arranged for a refund on all the money I have paid out.  Also been on to BT who say try in a couple of months as they are improving the service all the time.  Comes from living in a village too far from the exchange :(

I might try NTL Robin if they don't make too much mess.  A friend of mine has it and I must admit the connection is very fast so may give it a go.

Trouble with these sites is that they are so b****y addictive and the people are so nice :D

I strongly recommend you don't touch NTL with a barge pole. In the 18 months I was with them, we had countless internet and phone outages. You can never get through to talk to anybody (typically, I waited about 50 minutes on the phone before giving up). The fault was never with our equipment, it was always at the local hub, but they won't log an engineer to try and fix it unless you guarantee to be at home- which meant I frequently had to be without internet and/or phone for up to 2 weeks (!), take an entire day of work, wait in until 5pm when they turn up, they confirm that the problem isn't in the house and then drive off to the local hub and fix it in 2 minutes! They are the worse company I have ever dealt with!

Good thing about ntl is they iz heavyily in debt and have just had a finance restructuring... which is good new for us.. as they really do need to get a bigger slice of the pie.. and if your m8 is not having any probs.. give em a blast.. whats the worst thing that can happen?.. if you can get ntl.. then go for it.. can always change again if they is crop. :)

Oz, have checked the website link you gave and they have checked my puter.  Is there any other charge apart from monthly fee?  Do you have to pay for digi set up, etc?

Yo Mudz

Digi set up? soz bit dense this morning... I pay 17.99 a month for digi tv and phoneline rental
and a further 17.99 for the broadband.. at the moment ntl are doing a deal of free install, free cable modem and first month free.. tis agood deal and one I can recommend highly... never had a problem, and lurve ntl cuz they is so much better and cheaper than bt,
who in my opinion are the gangsta's on the block.. blinking blonking BT overchargerers ripping peps off
NAUGHTY NAUGHTY BT PEEPS!
