Do you get flowers on the colstsfoot whatsit? What size are the leaves? It could be coltsfoot, or it could be butterbur, or there's a sort of giant butterbur thing growing on an abandoned plot on my site which I assume is a cultivated introduction from somewhere. It's so coarse-growing I wouldn't give it house room.

:) Morning all  :) I have just had a thought about the large leaved plant as you said it had a lovely flower spike check out ligularia the leathery heart shaped leaves grow up to 12" ( leopard plant compositea) there are quite a few  different varieties but L.dentata or L.clivoram may be a start point  ;D

I agree with Palustris.  Your big leaves that start off with spikey flowers in spring are petasites.   I was given some by a well-meaning friend who thought I needed something to fill up my new garden's boggy bit.  I planted some straight out and put the rest in a coldframe till I had time to plant it.  Ended up with a major invasion in both places and it took ages to get the hint and go away.

RB it does get flowers in spring and there are a large spike with small pink flowers.

MF i think u are right it is a member of the ligularia family the leaves are not leathery and they get alot bigger then 12''

obbelix i do agree with u it is a pest and so invassive pops up every where but i kind of like it and try to keep it under control , is all ready out of the bog garden and has ran aleast 9 foot from where i planted the first piece , they should not really sell things  like this without a warning  :o :o :o :o

It sounds like either butterbur or a close relative.
