Can I eat a chicken which died from unknown causes?
« on: November 21, 2015, 15:39:01 »
Our neighbours gave me a chicken which died yesterday. Can I make it into soup? I would cook it for hours.
Thanks! Love A.

You could cook it and use it as pet food I guess, but depends how much risk you want to put your pets and even your kitchen. :tongue3:
Bury it and use it as fertiliser. Dig deep or the  foxes will have it....

I would not, its not worth the risk. I've no qualifications in this field, but I'm with Green lily on this one.

That genuinely made me laugh aloud.  And I entirely agree.  We wouldn't eat a bird that had died even if we knew that the cause was something innocuous like a heart attack.

Sorry for the late reply and I hope said bird has not been eaten - himself did not laugh out loud at the question and I wouldn't really write down what he did say, but he did say something along the lines of "that's why we have laws and inspectors to keep people safe"

I'm sure the power of Google will back him up on this as long as you don't follow the nutters who completely disregard public health.

It was just wishful thinking guys! The chickens you buy, even free range, look as if they have never ranged. I like food which has had a life, and therefore taste. Still, can't be helped apparently.

I would never eat a chicken that has died from an unknown cause.  What is strange though is why your neighbours gave it to you?  They couldn't have been happy about it or they would have eaten it themselves!
