Saffron season is go!
« on: September 27, 2015, 09:16:00 »
First flower this morning - much earlier than last year. Come rain, come shine, this means daily morning visits to the plot till they are done...

Well done, a pretty treat too!
I only managed to keep mine going for a couple of years, couldn't keep them growing well enough and they just kinda fizzled out.

Am determined to try and keep them. They get a top dressing of rotted manure & a nettle & comfrey feed as soon as they have finished flowering to try and build the new corms for next year.

I just hope that the drainage is ok. And mice don't find them. I've been advised to bury some fine metal mesh to stop the pesky varmints from digging them up.

Yes, each picking is kept between 2 sheets of kitchen roll till it's properly dried out. Last year's tasted amazing and this year there is a whole lot more. Am very pleased!
