hulless oats - suggested sowing date?
« on: August 23, 2014, 09:31:23 »
Hi

Does anyone grow hulless oats?

I can't find anything more specific than autumn for the sowing date.  When exactly should they be sown?

Thanks

Digeroo

Watch out if you are sowing oats it gets huge.  I got some which was abandoned in a layby,  did not know what it was though it was barley.  Thought I would use it as a green manure.   Meant to dig it in in march april but did not manage it.    Though it actually still had the husks on it.

It grew like topsy and ended up nearly six feet tall.    Cutting it down has been something of a chore. I needed a combine-harvester.  I have promised myself that if I have any more it will not be allowed to grow to maturity.

I sowed mid September last year, but only because that was when we were forecast with rain and it actually happened, so I rush out and threw it around.   The birds and voles will eat it, so it is best if it germinates quickly.  I am not sure the birds etc like getting too wet, so a really nasty couple of days is perfect.

Some sowed itself and is already coming up amongst my brassicas.
