Allotment site histories - annual call for assistance
« on: October 03, 2012, 17:34:16 »
There is where I usually say that there is a very brief history of allotments that you can find in the A4A wiki which includes a section with links to individual allotment site histories.

However, as I do not know what the situation is with the A4A wiki, I cannot say that. See the following page on my own website instead. It currently contains links to 56 site histories.

http://www.bkthisandthat.org.uk/OtherSiteHistories.html

It is around this time of year that I usually look for new additions. However, as time goes by it is becoming more difficult and time-consuming for me to unearth new histories by wandering round the web.

If there is a history on the web for your site, and you cannot see it listed, then it would help me if you could let me know of its existence.

The current entries range from roughly 300-400 words upwards. The majority are roughly equivalent to a sheet of A4 with a small number of more detailed pieces.

If your site does not yet have a history then this is where I try to persuade you (or a.n.other on your site) to produce one. It can make for a useful winter activity ... end of sell.

Thanks

Brian

I would love to get a proper history of our plot as it was originally just land that was effectively squatted by a lot of first gen Italian immigrants in the post war austerity era.
Unfortuantely the older guys are few and far between these days and getting fewer as the years roll on..
Moved to Portugal - ain't going back!

As the weather is distinctly inclement I have spent the morning looking for more site histories.

I have managed to find three. I have also checked all the links and found a number of broken ones which I have fixed when I found where the pages were now living.

As usual ... details of further links would be gratefully received.

Sorry but I can't do links..............

This year our site received a grant from the Heritage Lottery to research the history of our site and to record stories from the allotments past and present.

The site us we understand the only privately owned allotment site in the city of Leicester. Many of the plots have been worked bu generations of the same family for almost 100 tears.
We launch the DVD, booklet and web site at the end of the month but it already covers from 1877.
I hope this helps and please look at the videos.

Wizpod,

thanks very much for the info. I have added a link for Queens Road Allotments (Leicester) to the detailed history section of the page.

http://queensroadallotments.wordpress.com/history-2/

It is an excellent project. Very exemplary. Well done to all concerned ... and keep up the good work.

Hi,

links to the following histories have been added: Watford (transcript of a talk by Mary Reid to the West Watford History Group), Bishopthorpe Allotments, Epsom and Ewell, Over Allotments (Winsford), West Wickham and Wivenhoe Allotments and Gardens Association.

All links have been checked. Any broken links have been mended where it has been possible to locate replacement pages, otherwise they have been removed.
