I might tie 2 wheelie bins together this year to get a 8' of soil!!

As I'm in Nottinghamshire, I intend to break the record by starting off a seed potato at the bottom of a mine shaft then filling it in bit by bit till the plant finally breaks the surface in 2037. By my calculations there will be somewhere around 146 tonnes of potatoes from that one plant. My only problem is that I have worked out I need a 16 stone seed potato.

I can't dig a four foot pit to plant anything in because with my high water table, it would count as a well. Maybe I can find a way to build a potato skyscraper.

Robert - have you not heard of "sub-marine" potatoes ... they are specially grown in water and fed to the Marines!!

Back to being serious... I have confirmed with dad-in-law about his spuds.. Yes he plants them about a foot deep and then makes a ridge about a foot above ground.. so 2 foot of ridge total and about foot  wide slightly dished flat top to keep rain from running off the top.

He's always done it like that and has never bought a spud for 30 years!!
