Is anyone up for a tomato challenge for the biggest one for next year, it was mentioned on another thread but felt it needed it's own place so it doesn't get lost.

I am posting early so folks can investigate suitable seeds if they wish, be able to swap, buy etc and still have lots of time to start early.

There is lots of info on the internet for tips on growing giant tomatoes. A lot of the info suggests manuring the spot in the autumn (fall )so another reason to start early.

Although a competition, there are no prizes here and hopefully we won't take ourselves too seriously.

I intend to have a go, and will happilly share any info I find..no secrets here LOL

No rules, it is all on trust, but pictures, preferably on scales will be required to estimate the winner.

What do you folks think, come on I dare you !! I have never done this before so am a complete learner !! This supposed to be fun remember.

I will see if admin can make this a sticky.

AS Saddad sys all shop tomatoes that do have the stem on are cut off at the knuckle, so it is to show that you have grown it.

I agree i dont beleive any upstanding honest person on A4A would cheat???

Hi, I'm new here, and I'd love to join in on this challenge  Grin. I bought some enormous beefsteak tomatoes on the journey back through France lasy year. I've no idea what varieties, one yellow, one red. I saved some seed, so it wll be a challenge to see if I can get them to grow as big as the ones I bought (about 1kg each!).

Hello for the 'new' one..and welcome. It is such a buzz to get some holiday 'suveniers' growing.. Grin Lets hope you have good success growing them...well not too much..as I'm going WIN.. Grin Wink

My seeds are all picked out for competion now..and looks like I'm going to have to do more than just 2 varieties.. Roll Eyes Is that going to be omen for the rest of the year?..more likely..I always end up doing 'just one more' variety and squeezing them in somewhere.
I'm going till end of month and then my 'giant' seeds are going into propagator.. Grin Grin Grin

Super Marmande  are the first to have peeked out from the compost

& Roma just through (although not for competition)

Temps are forecast to drop through the week with wintry showers so tomato TLC needed Grin
