I think most of the serious growers do grow under cover in the UK.  Have a look on http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/Default.asp

Thats correct Betty. All the big ones are grown under cover (even in the south)
There was a guy last year who grew a 750lb plus fruit and I suppose that 1000lb is possible outside in a really good summer.

Amazing!

You put a tremendous amount of skill into growing your giant, there's a world of difference between the way you do it and my feeble attempts!

Have you always grown under cover?

I believe they are. I'd like to know what can be achieved outside as well.

No Betty. The 1st couple of years, I was growing outside. I managed to get a 495lb fruit but it was hard work.

Hi, new to this gardening lark - just levelloing some ground for a polytunnel and raised beds.

Anyway I digress, I have some hundredweight seeds, and another variety, can't remeber what they are. Any tips on growing pumpkins at my first attempt will be gratefully received. i will follow the link to the bigpumpkins site.

And while I'm not expecting too much of myself on my first attempt, as long as the pumpkin comes out bigger than an apple!!!
