Sprouting Spuds

The spuds in store are sprouting - two sacks of them. I have tried to keep them dark but obviously not enough. Can I rub the sprouts off and pretend it didn't happen, or do I have to throw them away. Oh dear, what a waste.
Please advise me.

They must be earlies??
If so, first get them into the non-frosty light & let the shoots green up.

Then decide whether you want to take the shoots off. It's been shown that you can still plant them when very spindly.

you will still be able to use the potatoes for eating, think its just the warm spells of weather (well warmer than we should be having for this time of year) that as tricked the pots into sprouting. Keep them in as cool a place as possable to try to stop them sprouting.

Hi both - thanks - one sack is desiree and the other my precious king edwards - they are not earlies. So sprouting won't make them poisonous? I know, I'll try them on Dave first!!!!

No, your potatoes'll be fine!  :-) 

Just rub all the sprouts off - you'll have to do it again in a wee while?  You might find, by the second time, the potatoes are a bit past their best - but still usable.
