Mouse outside the house.....

.....light coloured fur with white bits underneath, huge ears, long tail and moves more like a kangeroo rather than scurrying. It's living under the paving slab that covers our outdoor back drain and is feeding on the seed that the birds discard from the feeders.  Made me jump tonight when I went to light the greenhouse heater, any ideas?  If I can get a picky I will but it moves really fast.

Thanks Georgie, looks like the woodmouse which makes sense as we back on to woodland. Seems a good friend for the garden too with the other preferences in its diet.

Wood mice jump a lot; they're far more agile than house mouse.

Think there must ave been a field mouseon our patio last night as nesxt door's cat was sitting there.

When I had field mice in the garden they used to scale the Forsythia to get at the nuts in the bird feeder.  They are incredibly agile and great fun to watch - certainly not something to worry about.

Update on our fieldmouse.....................hadn't seen him/her for a couple of nights.

We thought it was because as we are now dog-sitting for the next two weeks, it possibly had been frightened off, until our neighbour, yesterday on commenting on the collie, mentioned that her Billy the cat had brought in a mouse!  She managed to get it off him and it ran under the washing machine. She has one of those humane traps and with the aid of a bit of digestive biscuit lured him in.  He/she is now residing in a local field a car drive away.

A happy ending
