A useful cookery book!
« on: December 31, 2009, 14:41:47 »
I'm not much of a foodie so my cooking is pretty basic and simple!
However I'm looking to spend the book tokens that I've been given on a useful cookery book.
Nigel Slater's book The Kitchen Diaries has been recommended, and certainly appeals to me if this review is anything to go by.

Any other suggestions would be most welcome!   :)

We find "the Soup Bible" very useful for converting gluts from the allotment...  :)

I just got Nigel Slater's 'Tender'  and it a great book. Would definitely recommend it for different ideas for using up all the veg from the lottie. Well worth a look. :)

I also recommend this book. It is a thick book with hundreds of recipes. Much better than some other TV chef type books, which are all pictures and few actual recipes.

Another one I like is river cottage - preserves.

Flighty I like Sophie Grigsons Vegetable Bible (why are they always bibles!!  ::) ) - lots of veggie dishes and ideas, simple and tasty (not many meat dishes, I think Nigel Slater would do more meat dishes). I found it useful this summer with the food from my plot. But it depends what kind of food you like  ;D

Flighty ....

I really like the Readers Digest THE ALLOTMENT GARDENERS COOKBOOK
Each chapter is arranged by fruits or vegetables alphabetically. So if you have broccoli to use...go the the relevant chapter and you will find various recipes using broccoli.
I love this book as it contains all the vegetables us allotmenteers grow. I refer to it constantly

Flighty, you say your cooking is 'pretty basic'

Rather than go for cheffy books, I would suggest you go for 'tried and tested' good home cooks.

Personally I don't think you can beat Delia's complete cookery course.  She de-mystifies some of the supposedly complicated recipes.  She is a good basic, honest cook.

I'm not a big fan af her later cookbooks.  She does seem to cash in on her previous success.

Another 'good cook' is Mary Berry.

Now is a good time to browse through the likes of W H Smith.  They will have a lot of books at 'sale' prices.

Go for 'good honest' rather than 'cheffy'.

Hope that makes sense, and good luck with your buying.

My favourite cookery book of the moment is The Vicar's Wife's Cook Book and OH bought me Nigel Slater's Tender for Christmas.  I'm a big fan of his previous books so my expectations are high.  Top of the list of all the books I used all last year (I don't remember recipes and always have to look them up) was The Riverford Farm Cook Book - absolutely brilliant for in season/by season cooking with an emphasis on veg. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Valmarg I can cook reasonably well but since I'm on my own and I'm happy with plain cooking then I keep it pretty basic! I know just what you mean which is why I like Nigel Slater as he's a cook not a (so-called celebrity) chef. Thanks for your suggestions which have given me food for thought!  :)

Jill many thanks for your excellent recommendations!  :)

I went with Duke's recommendation and got a copy of the Reader's Digest The Allotment Gardener's Cookbook .
There's certainly lots of great looking recipes in it some of which I reckon that even I can do! I'll let you know how I get on.   :)

Have spent a couple of hours perusing the Soup Bible which I received from Amazon this morning. Some lovely recipes for sure. I have lots of red peppers in the freezer so tomorrow I'll be making sweet potato and red pepper soup and probably spicy carrot soup with garlic croutons the following day. I love soups in winter!

I bought a used copy for £3.30 + £2.75 postage - but I'm sure it has never been used!
