cornichon
« on: August 10, 2009, 22:51:13 »
I have a cornichon growing quite madly in greenhouse.  The "fruits" are short and fat and very prickly.  When are they ready and what do I do with them?  Thought they were gherkins.

Also have one short, fat, prickly Marketmore cucumber.  What do I do with that.

All ideas welcome

Peel and then halve, de-seed, and slice, make some vinegrette. And the rest is history  :D Had a few this year and very yum!

Gherkin maybe but how do you get rid of the prickles.  Its more like a cactus.  The ones you used to buy in the chip shop years ago didn't have prickles.  How do I give it a shave - Wilkinson Sword or cut throat razor?

The prickles rub off really easily.

I just rub the prickles off Marketmore and eat it skin and all, tastes way better than the supermarket cucumbers.

I'm going to experiment with gherkins this year, one thing I intend to try is hot pickling in 50:50 water and white vinegar with some Dill in it, I suspect it is close to the American style gherkins, but of course as the vinegar is rather weak you have to boil everything to get it to preserve....

Will also be making some picallilli this weekend..... need to find the biohazard suit........
