Giant outside butternut squash
« on: October 02, 2008, 21:44:02 »
I have amazed myself this year by growing a massive butternut squash outside, here in Liverpool despite the iffy weather this year.

The plant was grown without manure or feeding on a spare bit of land on my new half plot and grew 5 metres in all directions. The photos are of the first of the five huge squashes to ripen.

Has anyone grown a bigger one?

I am green with envy George. :)

My Butternut is nothing but wonderful foliage and male flowers, not one female.

Oh well, better luck next time.

Well Done. ;D

I have some big ones ripening, also on unfed soil on newly broken ground. If they ripen before frosts I'll post images. Not as big as yours though.

I do have a mystery enormous pumpkin, however, it's still green, no idea what variety it is, it matches nowt I sowed.

I've had Waltham Butternut grow this large in the past, funny shaped ones with thicker necks than seed end. We has a 2800g one in 2006.

3.2Kg, 3.8Kg and 3.4Kg respectively. There's a few more around that size on the floor in the background. It's been a great year for Butternuts.

Tony.

Sow it, grow it, eat it.

Wow, they are great ,  :o

Was having some success myself for a first time grower- from seeds taken from an ASDA squash.

but - a couple of weeks ago found that my one and only hope of a full sized specimen was
  PINCHED,   :'(
Wont even consider an ' inside ' job - we have some houses around us where the peeps think it's OK
to climb the gate to get over thier back fence and home.   Dont they know we count them !
I am only left with mini ' light bulbs' and they're dropping off !

One off our lovely ladies on the site has put my name on one of hers !   ;D

Think thats a bit special x

If you are going for a record... there is a Butternut called " Really Big Hybrid"  that grows very big..

3.8 Kg! that is fantastic, plot 69.

I can see a competition starting for next year, after all you can eat a big squash, but a 500lb pumpkin is useless as is a 30ft high sunflower.

In answer to KT, there are 4 more on the outside squash (still growing).

Butternut squash was £1.75 a Kg in Tesco last week, so plot69 has about £35 worth in his photo.

I haven't picked mine yet - but don't think they are anywhere near that size although they have done well.

Mine were Sprinter and F1 hybrid
