Allotment Sheds for Security
« on: September 15, 2005, 15:58:57 »
Is it a good idea to get a shed for the Allotment, to store items, including Tools, or do some people,  hide their Tools on their Plot.

There are two schools of thought on this, one says keep everything open so they can sea there's nothing worth nicking, and the other says lock everything up. I took the former view till the local kleptomaniac started targeting my plot, and now have everything pretty secure. Thieves on our site usually go for plots they can break into fairly easily, unless they're targeting the kleptomaniac that is. Personally I'd go for a shed.

:) Hi , this is my first post, having lurked for a few days, but had to say something, as my shed was broken into at the weekend. Those sheds on our site that didnt get hit, were burned to the ground. My shed was forced open using tools from neighbouring allotments that dont bother to lock everything up !  So, you should talk to others on your site to find out the level of vandalism and theft in the area and just take your pick. I will be mending my shed, locking it up again and keeping my fingers crossed.
Good luck
Anne

;) Welcome Anne :) My plan is to leave the shed unlocked fill it with junk plus one fork, spade, rake, hoe and trowel, scattered in and under the junk, total cost from carbooty £8. I have bought back-up tools from carbooty at £2 a time and keep them at home ready for the next attack, how long I will keep this up remains to be seen. :-\

My shed is for me and me alone, anyone who enters does so at their own risk, without wanting to sound too rude, I use it as a toilet (No 1's) with a receptacle that I don't clean out too often :o that leaves an atmosphere that I can tolerate but not others, so if they want to spend time in there rummaging so be it at their peril. :P

Hi, I've just taken on an allotment. In the rules the don't allow sheds. Whilst mentioning this they say they have never had any vandalisum on the site. They seem to think one and the other go hand in hand, so they don't intend to change that rule.  :-\

It makes it a lot harder for those people without a car if you can't store your tools in a shed, but I can see the logic in not having one so you don't encourage vandals etc.  I have a shed bar on my shed, which was got from Northumbria Police and I defy anyone to get into it.  On the other hand my shed could be set alight and all that would be left would be the metal bar and lock.  I don't support keeping your shed open though because even if your tools are second hand they can still be used as weapons to damage other people's or your own plot.  So I suppose it is swings and roundabouts and it is a matter of personal choice.

Hi Linda, on the allotments i use we are not allowed to have sheds, greenhouses, any form of cloches ,compostbins or heaps, waterbuts, which is a pain, lot of hard work, transporting everything in when needed,  >:( >:( but its true we have'nt had any problems with vandals and we are on a large housing estate :D, we have more problems with rabbits pinching and causing trouble, >:(

What an attitude! I presume it's a privately owned site.

No matter how big or strong the locks, glass is wafer thin, (easy access) No matter how big or strong the locks, the wood panels are wafer thin, a couple of Karate kicks and you have a hole big enough to climb through. :o

Eight quids worth of tools lost is a cheaper than a damaged shed, IMHO. :-\

I was working on a booby trap plan to pour said liquid over an uninvited guest, but thought better of it when I discovered a cheeky allotment neighbour popped in to borrow my watering can when I wasn't there, that would have been very hard to explain. :o

Hi we havent posted for 6 months weve been busy with our plots and one thing we did was build a shed from stuff outa skips. Our old shed was an inherited fallin down thing that had 'dangerous structure' written all over it. It was a great laff collecting stuff and mossa also offered to tarmac a few drives in the process. Once we'd built the shed out of old wood and chucked out doors ( 3 we used them as walls- only 1 door really) we then disguised it as an old burnt out tin shack by nailing burnt out old aluminium sheets we scavenged from a garage and voila , a shed that looks Cr** but dont look good enuff to break into...so far. Anyway we dont keep nothin in it we leave the tools under the dung heap covered with a bit if old corrugated aluminium . Most sheds down our allotment get broken into or burnt at one time or another so thats why we didnt spend anything on the shed. The shed is for havin a brew in and keeping the seeds dry...oh and standin in if it rains hard.

;D Would love to see a picture of it, any chance? I think home made sheds are a work of art, the more dilapidated the better. ;D
