I have a devon marshmallow and since it started to flower in the pot  all the flowers trail on the ground. I have tried to stake the flowers upright but when I lift them up they break off at the base.. are these specially for hanging baskets or is the plant faulty

I think you are supposed to support them as they grow, It may be too late as you are finding to try to support them in an upright position once they have grown in a horizontal position.
If you are really interested in carnations, pinks etc there is a society called the British National Carnation Society and the website is: http://carnations.org.uk/
